Wizard Barristers First Ep Review

Welcome to a world where wizards and regular humans co-exist, perhaps not on the best terms. When a wizard commits a crime, it is up to a wizard barrister to act as their attorney. This is a story of the youngest wizard barrister in history, Cecile Sudo.

Quick Note:

I may try to change up the style of my reviews. Perhaps reveal less plot events (less spoilers) and try my hand at a different style of writing reviews, or I’ll retain my style as is. Also, first episode reviews may be sporadic and less tied to a schedule because of the larger quantity of anime I try to watch each season, but I’ll post a schedule on how often I’ll post soon.

Moving right along, the anime is clearly good at fighting scenes. The animation is great and starts with a chase scene of the police trying to apprehend a wizard who can control flames (Ace is that you?). Well, controlling flames isn’t exactly unique, but it’s still a treat to watch.

He is eventually caught by two particular policeman. The wizard at least knows his rights; he says he will not talk unless he receives a wizard barrista, who act as attorneys for cases that involve wizards. He is then taken to the Court of Magic, which as the name implies, is a court specifically for these wizards.

We later learn that the flame wizard is known as a Wud. Although it was not explicitly defined, I’m assuming it’s not a very friendly term, and could be wizard criminals. The agency that tried to defend this flame wizard are known as the Butterfly Law Agency. The same agency that the world’s youngest barrista, Cecile Sudo, will soon be a part of. She’s also accompanied by the talking frog Nana Genie, a creature known as a familiar. He’s a little bit of a pervert, but that’s okay, since he’s a frog.

On her way to Butterfly Law Agency, she encounters a crime scene that involved a wud and a flying dragon machine. She intervenes and hastily decides to be the wud’s attorney.

Hotaru Natsuna is another rookie who is joining the agency. We don’t get a lengthy introduction of all the characters, but the show will be centered around the Butterfly Law Agency and Cecile herself. Natsuna does not have a good impression of Cecile for being late to her first day on the job. I suspect she’ll eventually accept her as a comrade and learn from Cecile, and vice versa to Cecile. Some of the members also have some negative impressions on her, either for being late or for taking on a case so hastily.

On the other hand, Ageha Chono, the head of the agency, does not object to Cecile’s actions and actually encourages her to continue the case. However, Cecile does manage to prove herself to be a very hard worker. Through her actions and words in this episode, it’s clear she’s very dedicated and is serious about doing her job properly as a wizard barrista. She was able to find convincing evidence to protect her defendant, and next episode should show how the magic court works. Cecile also reveals her power near the end of the episode. She gathers metallic substances from her surroundings to create a Diabloid, which looks like a magic mech (what is up with all these mechs in this anime season, not that I’m complaining).

Impressions:

Overall, I’d have the say the episode was okay. It wasn’t particularly amazing, but it wasn’t that bad either. The action scenes were great and I’d say it’s one of the bigger strengths of Wizard Barristers. However, I also like that the plot isn’t completely centered on action, and revolves around law and order, so the plot is a little more unique than your typical shounen story. There is plenty of destruction and lights everywhere, which are a treat to the eye. The characters seemed fairly generic. We have the typical cold, seemingly intelligent man who doesn’t approve of Cecil very much, but will probably re-evaulate his own opinions later in the show. We also have a fashionable, well endowed big sister type of character. The main character herself has a very clear cut goal of being a good wizard barrista, but she hasn’t yet revealed any reasons behind her goal. She is likeable however, as I can see her naive, yet passionate personality become endearing as the show progresses.

The pacing of the episode was also a bit awkward, it felt a bit rushed to me. Main character is introduced, and then already takes on her first case. We also get small segments of an unknown enemy, who tries to gauge Cecil’s strength. Their introduction felt poorly executed, like they were just thrown in the episode to get them in the picture, as they’ll have some significance later in the story. There are interesting tidbits to the story. Wizards in this world are often viewed with prejudice and scorn, as they are clearly a minority. There are many wizards who commit crimes, which only add to the negative impressions of them. Laws are titled “Magic Prohibition” versus more positive names regarding magic. All in all, the premise is more mature than your typical magical action show, and the action sequences are great. The characters on the other hand are a hit and miss, some are interesting but some feel very generic.
